You are correct Timmy Joe! 800 E. Country Club Rd. to be exact. Not that I spent any time there of course. Besides the Star-Lite on the Dexter Hi-way, there were 2 more drive in's on the southside. One was the Ball-o-Jack and I think the other was a spanish language drive in. We went to so many drive in movies as a little kid that my Dad built a little redwood box for me to sit on in the front seat between Mom and Dad. I saw the first part of the movie "Them". Started in the front seat. Retreated to the backseat and forced the folks to go home early. Scary movie for a sensitive little kid like me. That was at the Star-Lite. (next door to Fair Park Stadium and the ENM State Fair grounds).

My family would go to the drive-in with all of us little kids in our pajamas.  Mom would fix sandwiches or hamburgers and we would eat supper at the drive-in.  We were rarely awake when the "feature" started.  I can still smell the popcorn and craved a bag or a big cup with butter.  Those smells, tastes, and experiences are so vivid in my mind.  Roswell was a great place to grow up.

Tuna fish sandwiches and iced tea was our drive in movie dinner. A trip to the concession stand and a begging session with Dad for a chocolate "Toddy' was all I wanted. Those little cans of chocolate drink in a pop top can. Google it!! Growing up in Roswell!! Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end..and they haven't!!

My dad just couldn't get enough of the scarry shows. As a kid we probably saw all of those type shows.

Seemed to be a trend in naming with one-word titles. "THEM", "IT" etc. The giant ants, spiders, taratulas, tomatoes, dinosaurs, and anything else a young mind could think was scarry! They were so scarry back them.

When I see one now they are so poorly done and the acting is terrible, but I still love em!!

Speaking of Goddard High, they never should have opened it. My personal opinion of course.

Yep, went to the drive-in (Starlight) every Saturday night, with homemade hamburgers and cookies. Dad would get us a coke & popcorn! Then go to the swings and play till the movie came on , it got dark and I couldn't find my way back to car.  Didn't have to worry about getting "stolen" in those days! Love growing up in Roswell.... wanna do it all over again!!!

My dad would take us to the Starlight on occasion to see nothing I remember seeing.

What I do remember is the play ground in front of the screen, the concession stand and my dad slaping me around...just kidding about my dad slapping me around.

Yes, Roswell was a great place to grow up, especially when you only got to do it once.

Joe:  I agree - there was not a need for any High School except Roswll High - but I guess they had a reason - don't know what it was because Walker Air Force Base left - the population went down so much - especially the number of students - so what was the need for another High School - It wasn't like Roswell was a hugh city and distance was not a problem - right?  I think we graduated right before Goddard was built so it didn't effect us that much as far as splitting the kids up  - but it sure did right after we graduated.

Take care - see you in Septmber!

Now I am going over these discussions--"THEM"  was my favorite and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" was my second. THEM was on tv not too long ago--during my knee surgery downtime. Dee, you and I probably played on the swings together!

I don't remember Toddy--it probably came out after I went to the movie coz I am older than you.

Speaking of Goddard--they have tried many times to close one HS and you can imagine  what the uproar has been over that. Goddard right now is in a mess because of mold causing diseases--there is a suit over that. Don't hear much about RHS--they have improved over the years and it looks great. All the money poured into education seems to go for making schools look pretty plus adds baseball fields and the like--educating students is not like it was in our day. I really hoped we could have another gathering there but the cost has really gone up and it is a holiday week-end. Maybe for our 50th we can--will have to charge more!  Oh well!

OH Joe,  have to take a stand here... Goddard Rockets State Football Champs two years in a row, back to back.  My nephew plays offense and defense, we have traveled two years and not missed a game.  Mike Whalen, Tim's brother, one of the awesome football coaches for the Rockets.

Love the Coyotes still, but my kids went to Goddard and lots of us have ties to Goddard, too.

Lucky us, two outstanding high schools in little ole Roswell!!!

Dragging Main to the Starlight Drive In - What a great comparison...... Swingin on the swings with Margaret to dragging main, trying to figure out how we can crash the Institute without getting caught, going to PALS, etc etc etc - It was the best growing up in a small town and having alot of the same classmates from 1st grade thru high school!

Do the kids still drag main?  Doubt it???

Linda,

My point is, it never should have been opened. I've been told it bacame a political football, and sounds like it still may be.

I speak highly of their athletic success, it's great for the kids and that is number one.

Go Coyotes, and to...ooops, almost did it again.

Dee,

Do you, or anyone else for that matter, know if it was the PALS or CHUMS who stayed a weekend in Ruidosa at one the parents cabin?

Joe,

I was at Ruidoso so  many times breaking into parent's cabins that I don't remember but I know PAL and CHUMS were always doing something - so probably did.  Why did we trash your parent's cabin?

Dee

No, our soph. year, the fall of 62, several car loads of guys drove up to Ruidosa to crash one of these weekend gigs. The altenator on my car went out leaving me with no lights, and I spent the night on the floor surrounded by girls, girls, and more girls. Believe it or not, I slept liike a rock, no pun intended. I believe this event had adult supervision, but would not bet on it.
