No one will ever believe this.  I climbed to the top of the tower and onto the roof of SJH one weekend with my cousin.  That's a great pic and comparison to NMMI

Scott - it is nice to hear from you - I just don't remember that many problems at the Petroleum Building at lunch - Obviously there was - from what everyone is writing about - I just always ordered my grilled cheese sandwich and went back to school,  Will see you in September - Right?  Take Care!

Scott,

As I rmember, South was the high school prior to the opening of what we know as RHS. I do not know what North was prior to that, but I would not be surprised if it was the only Jr high in town at the time.

I currently work for the school district and my office is in the Administrative and Educational Services Center (AESC) which used to be the old North/Pueblo Junior High. In the hall in front of the auditorium are pictures of all the schools, old and new, in the district. Back in 1900-1901, the building was called Central School and was later changed to Roswell Junior High School. In 1954, the name was changed to North Junior High, and in 1968 when Sierra Middle School was opened, the name was changed to Pueblo. When the city schools merged with the county schools in the late 60's, the name was changed to Educational Services Center and was no longer used as a school. In 2000, an addition was built to house the administration offices for the district and the old part of the building (where I work) houses special education services. Hopefully, I've got the dates sort of correct!

Someone had mentioned that the old South Junior High School was Roswell High first. It was RHS until 1954 when the present RHS was built.

Thanks Pam.  I had no idea what North was before nor what it has become now.  That's good history info!

Mary, I had no idea about the school's history either! I've walked down that hall many times over the last 15+ years and never took time to read the captions on the pictures until I read this discussion and decided to check them out. Then I had to keep running back down the hall to make sure I had the names and dates correct! I love having my office in the "old" part of the building instead of the new addition.

I put this on this on the "Can you top this" subject, but just have to put it on this site also. Dee Tapp is trying to find more stuff from NJH, but I think we have got her beat. Step up tho the plate and show more SJH pictures and memories.

By the way, how many of you took dancing at the McVoy dancing studios? Do any of you still have your dance cards with who you danced with? I DO. You know who you are.....

Nope - my folks couldn't afford for me to go Mc Voy - but I definitely needed the help!!!  I have a lot of fond memories at SJH -but don't know how interesting they would be to the rest of you - Coach Ben Hodges was my English teacher - remember our class room was upstairs right off of the stairs going outside which we had to use for fire drills - I was in chourus which I loved - I road the bus everday and met my friends - one I remember in particular was Chrisy Bader - who has passed away - that  has really bothered me because she was so full of life - and Gail Glover - and so many others.  I took driver's Ed training my last year at SJH - We all passed  and had our driver's license when we went on to Roswell High - and of course the football games and basketball games were wonderful times.  I was on the girls Volleyball team - and was actually pretty good at that - we took several trips out of town for that which was a lot of fun.  One of the main classes I remember was my Freshman science class - can't remember the teacher's name but Earl Malone was in the class - and was always in trouble - He was pretty honary but a lot of fun too - God rest his soul - he died very early in a car accident.  Eating lunch at the Petroleum Building or going over to Aschcraft's store - those were every day things.  Those were good times - will never forget them!

You are so right, Tommy. When I first saw the photo you posted of SJH I thought I was looking at NMMI for a second. Same architect?  There is another project for you.. research that! While you are at it, can you find out what year each was built?

I think it is very interesting how similar the design is to the NMMI Sally port.
