The Jingle Bob Drive In

As a junior and senior I got to work selliing tickets and  candy cokes and hotdogs in the concession stand and was surprised at how much fun it was to see peolple and families enjoy themselves.  We who worked there had to make sure no one would sneak in after the ticket box would close.   Every body was charged the same price per car whether they got there early or late - no exceptions.  One evening a guy was turned around and refused because he didn't want to pay full price.  It was some guys who been drinking a few too many Pabst Blue Ribbons.  Anyway they left the entrance and tried about five minutes later tried to get in through the exit where all four of their tires were punched out and the driver and his buds were really pissed off about having 4 flats.  We called the cops and had them escorted off the premises.  Cool movies I saw there:  Barrabas, with Anthony Quinn; Fellini 's  Mondo Cane, (It's a Dog's World); Help with the Beatles, and other boring fare that I can't recall.

One particular night the manager, a 20 year RHS graduate, named Fred told me I would have to ride to the Plains with him to take in the receipts.  He gave me the keys to this old 54 Ford Convertible with a shot muffler and told me I was going to drive.  So I did.  I drove down the hill past the coke bottlery and came to a stoplight at the corner where the bank and northeast corner of the courthouse square intersect.  Fred told me to keep the foot on the brake till he said let go.  Meanwhile he had his hand on the accelerator revving that engine just as loud as he could.  He said:  "when the light turns green release the brake.  As I did, I realized I was driving car like a bat out of hell loud and fast.  As the officer pulled me over, and approached I thought sure I was going to jail.  But I told him we were having trouble keeping the engine running and that was why we were revving.  I also told him that it was Fred's car.  The officer gave me a ticket for careless driving. I told Fred you will pay my fine and believe it or not he gave me the money to do just that.  Fred was some kink of nut but he was fun. And I remember him laughing as I had to explain what happened.  Good memories of the Jingle Bob.

WOW! What a good memory!  My parent took  me to the drive in almost every Sat night until I was in high school - needless to say I didn't want to go anymore then! But, I wouldn't go on dates to the drive-in cause I knew my parents would be there!!!!! Then some of my friends decided that it was a good way to get their way paid in if they went with my parents.... so we would and then ditch them once we got in. That only worked a couple of times!

I worked at Sweetbriars and never got a paycheck cause I bought too many clothes! Oh and I worked at the Diary Queen - I can still make the best curls on top of ice cream! My grandkids are very impressed!!! LOL

Looking so forward to seeing you at the reunion - When do you arrive in Roswell?

Dee

Hey Dee

Thanks for sharing!  Vive le diference!  My parents never could take us to a drive-in because there were too many of us to keep up with.  (between the 1st generation, me, Rudy, and Andy and the 2nd genteration, George, Alice and Tony there were 9 years.!)  But we made up for it by being allowed to work when we turned 15, 16 , & 17 and we WANTED to work!  That's the crazy thing about it.  It was so much fun!    I wish I could remember what minimum wage was. ($1.50 or $1.75?)  I remember thinking how nice it was to buy my own clothes, too.  Plus, Butterfingers were always available at the movies.  And I still love DQ!  especially the chocolate dip cones.  Yum!

I will arrive in Roswell sometime on the afternoon of the 2nd of September!  See you soon.  Don't know yet where I'll stay.  Hampton or Holiday INN or somethin'  I'll figure it out.
