Army for 23 years (in and out of the Army three times), U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C. in the 70's, Bachelor of Science in Math from Eastern New Mexico University. ROTC and commission in the Army. Flew helicopters (MEDEVAC pilot). Master of Science in Computer Science from Colorado State University. After Army retirement, worked at Hewlett-Packard for 7 years in Colorado. Music Director at music school in Washington state. Then lived in San Antonio for 4 years. Now retired and living in South Dakota in the Black Hills.

Play in the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, Rapid City Municipal Band, Rapid City New Horizons Band (wife Linda plays in that also - percussion), and some other groups. Instruments are Trombone and Euphonium.

2015 - Just purchased my 30th motorcycle (no kidding, 30 motorcycles since I was 15 years old and more than a million miles on bikes). Linda and I now the proud owners of a 2015 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited. Just in time for the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (we live 10 miles away ). Rally organizers expect over one million to attend this year. Yikes!!

2018 - update - we now live right in Sturgis, home of the largest annual motorcycle rally in the world.

School Story:

When I and others in the Roswell High School Band attended All-State in Albuquerque, I am told (by Ronnie Horne) that I almost got myself and some of my friends thrown in jail. I can't for the life of me remember what it was that I did, but it must have been one of my less remarkable moments. (2015 - I am told that it was a pillow fight in the hotel room where we were staying in Albuquerque - pillows destroyed!) I know that I used to drive Mr. Summersgill (band director) nuts. Sorry Mr. Summersgill.

Also remember leaving the parking lot at the high school after a game of touch football. Warren Schumpert (he is very sadly no longer with us) was sitting on the passenger side, and I made an outrageous right turn in my parent's VW Beetle, and promptly turned the car over on its side. There we were, sliding along the road, on the left side of the car, me in the driver's position, and Warren (a big fellow) sitting on my head. The window was open and I can't believe how lucky I am, and I guess Warren, for not having picked up a large amount or road rash. No injuries at all, but I was not having a good time driving home (after pushing the car upright) with the impending news I was going to have to give my folks. My older and younger brother also have the distinct honor or having wrecked that same VW. When I graduated from college many years later, my folks still had that car, and offered it up as a graduation present!

The Yankee Nomads, a folk trio I was in during the mid-late 60's. Left to right: Tim, me and O.J. We were all in the Army and stationed in Europe. We tried out for a soldier show, got picked, and then traveled to and performed at all of the Army bases in Germany and Italy.

Hi Gordo,

Don't know if you remember me or not, but I remember you from band. I played euphonium, and was a general pain in the ass probably. I sure hope you can make it to the 50th reunion. I was only at RHS for a year and a half and don't remember too many people, the only ones mostly from the band. Several are coming that I do remember: Joe Henderson, Debby Brase, Sharon Thompson, Bobby Longwell and a couple others.

Do you remember that you and I used to "sneak" off the high school grounds and smoke cigarettes? Now why does that stick with me? Anyhow, I went to the 45th reunion (my first) and it was memorable and very emotional for me. Hope you can make it.

Your friend and partner in crime (smoking cigarettes - I finally quit),

John

Hi Ronnie,

I don't see you signed up for the reunion. I sure hope you can come. This will probably be my last I suppose, so would like to see those few folks I remember from my short stay at Roswell High School (I was there only a year and a half). Hope you can make it.

Your friend,

John

Hi Joe (and Debbie),

Just saw and posted a comment on your family picture. Really nice picture. You look like you should after 50 years (last time I saw you) and Debbie is still much better looking. I am hoping to attend the 50th reunion and will probably sign up shortly. Will be great to see you again. I saw Debbie Brace at the 45th, Bobby Longwell and Sharron Thompson, about the only people there that I remember from band. I was hoping you and Ronnie Horne would show up. But maybe this time... I am still playing euphonium and trombone in a bunch of groups. That stayed with me my whole life.

Hopefully see you soon.

John

On my Harley Road King in front of a really awesome plane (B-1 Bomber). Just getting ready for the Dakota Thunder Motorcycle Run from Ellsworth AFB through the Black Hills ending up in Sturgis (site of the annual Sturgis mortorcyle rally). An estimated 750,000 attended this year (2010).
